What Is the BizCover Tools of Trade Grant?
BizCover — Australia's largest online small business insurance platform — runs a monthly $1,000 grant specifically for apprentices and trainees who need financial help buying tools and equipment for their trade. One application is selected each month by a panel who assess based on need, commitment and the quality of the application.
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Grant amount | $1,000 per winner |
| How often | One winner selected every month |
| Applications open | 1 April 2026 |
| Applications close | 31 March 2027 |
| Who can apply | Apprentices and trainees currently undertaking a trade in Australia |
| Cost to apply | Free |
| How to apply | Online via BizCover website |
Worth applying every month: Applications are assessed monthly and close at the end of each month. If you are not selected one month, you can apply again the next. The more times you apply with a strong application, the better your chances.
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for the BizCover Tools of Trade Grant you must:
- Be currently undertaking training for a trade in Australia — you must be an active apprentice or trainee, not someone who has already completed their qualification
- Be training through a registered private training provider (RTO)
- Be an Australian resident or be eligible to work in Australia
- Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application
The grant is open to all trades. BizCover specifically lists carpentry, electrical, plumbing, automotive, hospitality and other skilled trades — but any trade qualification registered with an RTO is eligible.
Still an apprentice? This grant is for people currently in their apprenticeship or traineeship — not those who have already qualified. If you are in your first, second or third year of a trade apprenticeship and need tools to complete it, you qualify.
How to Apply — Step by Step
- Go to bizcover.com.au/trade-grant — the application form is on this page
- Fill in your personal details — name, contact information, age, and confirmation you are an Australian resident
- Describe your trade and training — what trade you are apprenticing in, which RTO you are training with, and what year of your apprenticeship you are in
- Explain what tools you need and why — be specific. List the exact tools or equipment you need, what they cost and why you cannot afford them right now (see winning tips below)
- Explain how the grant supports your career — the panel is looking for commitment and clarity about your goals
- Submit before the end of the month — applications are assessed monthly, submissions due by end of each calendar month
What Can You Spend the $1,000 On?
The grant is specifically for tools and safety equipment required for your trade. This covers a wide range of purchases:
- Hand tools — hammers, screwdrivers, spanners, chisels, trowels, levels
- Power tools — drills, grinders, saws, nail guns, impact drivers
- Test and diagnostic equipment — multimeters, testers, inspection cameras
- Safety equipment — steel-cap boots, hard hat, high-visibility clothing, harnesses, safety glasses
- Tool storage — toolbox, bags, cases to transport your kit to site
- Trade-specific equipment — anything essential to completing your apprenticeship
Example tool shopping list for a $1,000 grant:
- Cordless drill and impact driver kit — $280
- Steel-cap safety boots — $180
- Hard hat and safety glasses — $60
- Tape measure, level and marking tools — $80
- Toolbox and carry bag — $150
- Hi-vis shirts (3 pack) — $90
- Remaining for consumables (drill bits, blades) — $160
How to Write a Winning Application
The selection panel assesses applications on four criteria: demonstrated need, commitment to completing training, clarity about how the grant supports your career, and overall quality of the application. Here is how to score well on each.
1. Show genuine financial need — be honest and specific
Do not be vague. Instead of "I cannot afford tools," explain your actual situation: "I am a first-year electrical apprentice earning $15.50/hour. After rent, transport and food, I have approximately $80 left each fortnight. My employer requires me to have my own multimeter, steel-cap boots and a basic hand tool kit by next month — a combined cost of $650 I do not currently have."
2. Show commitment to your trade
Tell them why you chose this trade, how long you have been in your apprenticeship, and what your goals are after qualifying. Panel members respond to applicants who clearly want to build a career, not just collect a grant.
3. List exactly what you will buy
Name specific tools, brands if relevant, and their approximate cost. A shopping list showing you have thought carefully about how to spend $1,000 on the most essential items demonstrates maturity and genuine need.
4. Proofread and write clearly
Spelling errors and unclear sentences reduce your chances. Write your application in a Word document first, check it carefully, then paste it in. Ask someone you trust to read it before submitting.
Apply every month until you win. The selection panel changes monthly and so do the other applicants. A strong application submitted repeatedly has a much higher cumulative chance of winning. There is no limit on how many times you can apply.

While You Are At It — Get Your Tools Covered
If you win the $1,000 grant and spend it on tools, the next thing to think about is protecting them. Tradie tools are a target for theft — particularly from utes and vans parked overnight. Tools insurance covers theft, accidental damage and loss, and for most apprentices costs $150–$300 per year depending on the value of your kit.
BizCover offers tools and equipment insurance alongside public liability cover, and you can get a quote in minutes online.
Can I apply for the BizCover grant more than once?
Yes — there is no stated limit on how many times you can apply. Applications are assessed monthly and you can submit a fresh application each month. If your situation changes or you improve your application, reapplying makes sense.
Do I need to already own tools to apply?
No — the grant exists specifically to help apprentices who do not have the tools they need. You are applying for money to buy tools, not because you already own them.
Is the $1,000 grant taxable income?
Grants received for purchasing tools and equipment may be assessable income depending on your circumstances. Speak with your employer or a registered tax agent to confirm how the grant is treated for your specific situation.
What if I am in my third or fourth year of an apprenticeship?
You are still eligible as long as you are currently undertaking training and have not yet completed your qualification. Senior apprentices in higher years often have a strong case for the grant as their tool requirements increase with more advanced work.
Are hospitality apprentices eligible?
Yes — BizCover specifically lists hospitality alongside construction, electrical, plumbing and automotive trades as eligible. Any apprenticeship registered with an RTO in Australia qualifies.
